District grads garnering major scholarships

The Surrey School District continues a record of impressive grad performances and significant student scholarships, producing the most 2015 Schulich Leader Scholarship winners nationally of any single school district.

Selected from 1,250 national nominees, Arthur Chen, North Surrey Secondary; Rika Sugimoto Dimitrova, Semiahmoo Secondary; Brendan Cottrell, Elgin Park Secondary and Wylee Fitz-Gerald, Frank Hurt Secondary have received the prestigious 2015 Schulich Leader Scholarships valued at $80,000 and $60,000.

The scholarships are awarded to study science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) at one of 21 top Canadian universities.

Earlier this year, Johnston Heights Secondary grad Anthony Hope was one of 30 winners out of 3,800 applicants to receive the $100,000 Loran Scholarship. Also this year, two Fraser Heights Secondary Science Academy students were accepted into Ivy League universities with large scholarships; Matthew Li is going to Harvard to study engineering and Vicky Liu is heading to Yale for political science.
