Sept. 21 video message from Supt. Jordan Tinney: Update on COVID-19 exposures & review of notification processes

Following the first full week of classes, Superintendent Jordan Tinney provides a video update, including perspective on COVID-19 exposures in Surrey Schools and a reminder about notification procedures.

"As you may know, we have 14 schools where we've now sent exposure letters for Covid and I just want you to know about our processes, and again, what you can expect if your school is involved," says Tinney. "When there is a case, the health authority informs us and we issue a letter to the school. Even if there is one case attached to a school, the entire school gets a letter. If anyone in school or in the community is in need of additional watch… then you will specifically get a letter asking you to monitor for symptoms."

Supt. Tinney also helps put the number of exposure notices in the district into perspective.

"For Fraser Health, which is where we are, we have 70 new cases and 726 active cases," he explains. "So when we have a school district with 75,000 students and 12,000 employees, there is going to be contact with schools – we're just so big.

"It's a different world for us and our community, and I really do think about Surrey and our enormous number of multi-generational families. We are a community that care for our elderly and our elderly care for our children and their grandchildren. I'm sure this is a worry for families, and it's completely understandable."

Written transcripts of the video message in English, Punjabi, Chinese and Arabic are available HERE.
