Judges Neder Dhillon (director of instruction), Chef Terry Larsen, and trustee Bob Holmes inspect the construction, design and creativity of the entries at the 2018 student gingerbread competition at Enver Creek Secondary.
Students showed off their sweet skills at this year's Surrey Schools gingerbread competition, once again hosted by Enver Creek Secondary and teaching chef Mike Doyle.
About 40 students from across the Lower Mainland took part, representing eight schools and five school districts. In all, there were 18 diverse gingerbread pieces on display, ranging from more traditional houses and trains to space ships and a Scooby Doo Mystery Machine van.
Entries were given gold, silver and bronze awards by judges trustee Bob Holmes, chef Terry Larsen and director of instruction Neder Dhillon. Special awards were also handed out:
Best Overall Entry – Galaxy Park (pictured at right), McNair Secondary (Alison Cheng & Cheyenne Tu)
Best Theme Throughout – Wonka, Richmond Secondary (Courtney Ikuta, Raymond Li & Allysa Coronado)
Best Use of Colour – Whoville, Sardis Secondary (Danika Dod, Alayna Heppell, Chloe Kushnir & Lynnea Frost)
Best Table Presentation – Train, Richmond Secondary (Camille Go, Jay Chow & Maryam Watts)
Most Unique/Original Idea – Hogwarts, Garibaldi Secondary (Emma Willems & Regan Custance)
Most Skillful Use of Icing – La Casita Papasita, Garibaldi Secondary (Alejandra Magdalena Moreno Martinez & Lucia Wepfer)
