2012-13 local school calendar includes two-week spring break

calendar.jpgAt its public board meeting last night, the Surrey Board of Education approved the local calendar for the next school year.

For the fourth consecutive year, the board has established a local calendar that standardizes non-instructional days across the district and extends the normal one-week spring break in March, this time to nine days, followed by Good Friday.

As a staff report notes, the board and staff had consulted with employee groups and the community regarding the potential for extending the spring break again for next year as a means to save costs, estimated at almost $400,000. As in previous years, there will be an increase in instructional time to make up the additional four days.
As a result, the district’s local calendar for 2012-2013 incorporates the following extended spring break:

  • March 18 to March 28, 2013
And, the following six district-wide non-instructional days (or “Pro-D” days):
  • September 24, 2012
  • October 19, 2012
  • November 9, 2012
  • February 8, 2013
  • February 11, 2013
  • May 3, 2013
  • May 27, 2013
Dates such as the first day of school and statutory holidays are set by the B.C. Ministry of Education's Standard School Calendar.
