A partnership with the Surrey
RCMP, the Next 100 Years program is currently in its fourth year. This program
operates primarily at the elementary schools with the Grade 6/7's through
weekly presentations and activities centering on culture, identity and
community. Beginning after spring break, youth mentors from the affiliated
secondary school, who have completed a spring break training camp, will work
with the elementary students twice a week until the end of the school year on
themes including: identity, culture and diversity, anti-racism, sacrifice,
anti-oppression and community.
In addition to programming during
school hours, the Next 100 Years offers twice weekly, after-school sessions in
the springs as well as community parent nights on topics affecting youth, the
community and parents.
This program is currently offered
at Senator Reid Elementary/L.A. Matheson Secondary and at Beaver Creek
Elementary/Tamanawis Secondary. Each elementary site has approximately 100
participants and each secondary site supports with approximately 25 mentors.
Kabaddi CampAlso part of the Next 100 Years Program is the Kabaddi camp. Surrey Schools pioneered the
development of school sports Kabaddi league that encouraged participation of
all in this traditional sport developed in India. Camp Next (Kabaddi) is a peer
to peer mentorship program encouraging leadership development and physical
literacy.
Each spring and summer high school aged students lead elementary students in sport specific training while
providing role modelling and mentorship.
